Systems Reviews

System Reviews are a study and appraisal by a reviewer, of a firm’s system of quality control to perform accounting and auditing work. The system represents the policies and procedures that the firm has designed and is expected to follow when performing its work. The two main objectives of this type of peer review are to confirm to the firm that they are performing and reporting in accordance with all applicable professional standards and to provide a report on the reviewed firm’s system of quality control as required by the standards.

Engagement Reviews

Engagement Reviews are a study and appraisal by a reviewer, of a sample of a firm’s accounting work. The two main objectives of this type of peer review are to evaluate whether the samples of work submitted for review are in accordance with applicable professional standards and to provide a report on the engagements that were submitted for review. Specifically, this type of review is primarily available for firms that do not perform audits or other similar work and/or for firms that only perform higher levels of service such as work under the SSARSs and SSAEs.

Members of organizations like the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TXCPA) and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) are required to have a professional peer review performed by an independent firm every three years. This process ensures that all firms that provide accounting services to the public are always up to date on the latest technologies and trends in the industry.
